Hello Everyone... I haven't done an introduction yet but I plan to do so asap.

In the mean time I thought I would let you all in on a super deal that isn't so obvious on Craigslist.

I'm pretty new to the shopsmith world and have been busy purchasing various pieces when I find them on ebay, craigslist and the mothership as you all like to call it!

So far I've picked up a 510, a jointer, bandsaw, jigsaw, and a powerstation but the one thing I felt I lacked was a planer. I've made a couple of offers on the SS planer from various sources but until last evening I had no takers.

Well, that changed today! I happened to notice a new listing in East Memphis TN. The guy had 2 shopsmiths and happened to mention that he also had a ss planer. I called him as soon as I saw the listing and asked a few questions. He wasn't sure exactly what he had but told me it was a freestanding planer and it was a SS.

Well, to make long story short <ha!> he went back over to the house where it was stored and called me this morning with a better description. I made an offer and he accepted it. I spent the day driving to pick it up...

Okay, here is what I found that may be of interest to someone close to Memphis TN.

His dad was an avid woodworker who believed in top notch equipment with the best of everything for his small shop... he passed away 20 years ago and his shop was pretty much like he left it. Man, he had the whole router setup for the SS, the molder set with plenty of cutter bits, many saw blades, arbors, sanding disks, lathe tools (both the large set and a small set that I assume was for pen turning?). There were a couple of items still new in boxes (but almost everything I saw was in pristine condition). There was that clamp system shopsmith used to, or maybe still does sell, a tenon master, or was it a biscuit jointer?... I was overwelmed.

I wished that I had just started my SS journey because I would have gladly bought out the whole shop... it literally was stunning to me to see such a shop. No, there wasn't a jointer (he did have a craftsman jointer on the shelf though) or a bandsaw.

Anyway, the guy was very nice and interesting to talk to, so if anyone is close you sure couldn't find a better way to spend your Saturday checking out his equipment!

There was indeed two shopsmiths, one he had dedicated for turning, the other was a 510 (not an upgrade but an actual 510). Both had the mounted tool bench that shopsmith sells. There's much more, that I'm sure I'm leaving out, but heck, I'm enjoying my new (to me) SS planer pro!

Welcome to the funny farm. Glad you got yourself the Pro Planer you had been looking for and I hope to see you become a regular contributor.

This has a joiner on the end also. It appears the headstock is painted black. I have only seen one original black painted headstock which I still have. The original owner claims it came from the factory painted black. May be an early 70s headstock.

Really! An OEM 'black' with greenie table trunion and jointer.

Sorry but I 'do not believe'. Wonder if it has a Gilmer drive. :D

At least it appears to be a "B" casting.

On my iPad, I can make out black overspray on the underside of the jointer, so that's an amateur paint job. Wonder if he painted the top of the jointer tables as well? But who knows, maybe the jointer & legs, etc. were painted black to match one of those rare factory-black headstocks.

Regardless, for $100 it would be a "mini" SPT drive in my shop, if I could figure out a good way to shoehorn it in. But no can do. :(
