New to Shopsmith - Beavercreek, OH
Hello Shopsmith Community! I'm now the proud owner of a circa 1984 Shopsmith Mark V. I recently moved to Ohio from Colorado and left most of power tools behind. I discovered Shopsmith and found a good deal online. Now I have a Mark V, Plainer, Bandsaw, Joiner, Router, and Dust Collection system and need some help understanding how a Shopsmith really works. If anyone is in the Dayton area and would like to help me get started, I certainly would appreciate the help. Cheers T.I.
Welcome Tweintraub, You found the site that has the finest people to work with and some of the most knowledgeable about Shopsmiths. If you ever have a question, no matter how ridiculous you think it might be, these people will help. I never met so many pleasant people that are willing to help fellow woodworkers out of jams with pictures, terminology, and any other way possible. This is the greatest club you just joined, so welcome, and don't be afraid to ask anything, someone, will be able to help you.

Not only is all that true, but kaynyne just got a big check in the mail from us!kaynyne wrote:Welcome Tweintraub, You found the site that has the finest people to work with and some of the most knowledgeable about Shopsmiths. Always good to hear from the newest member to the addiction. Go to the Shopsmith web page and you will find a treasure trove of videos. There are also videos you can order from that site on set up and maintenance. There are the original instruction manuals that will be on ebay. Search for Shopsmith on Utube and there are lots of great Doug Reid vidoes and some older ones with Mel???. Doug is an aftermarket seller of the Power Pro system and some other updates but it is all great information.
The first thing to do is servcie your machine. Again, the vidoes at the Shopsmith site will walk you through the process. Most machines that have set for a while need some lubrications.
Shopsmith is a learning experience. Go slow and learn to understand the machine. I think most people that don't like the Shopsmith system get in a hurry. With a Shopsmith you have to spend a bit more time planning out how things will happen.
Enjoy!
Bob

Almost a year later, but if you are still needing help, I live just south of nearby Xenia. Cant say I know everything about the Shopsmith, but if nothing else maybe we can figure it out together and both learn some things.

Where did he go?
Oh horrors! Maybe he was smart enough to not 'need' our help.
We need him to help us!

Oh well, JPG. Maybe he gave up trying to figure it out. Or maybe I'll be seeing that Planer of his on Craigslist soon?
