New guy with new purchase & a Few Questions

First that is a jointer, not a planer. Yes they are different. They do different 'jobs'. If you never used a jointer, the difference does not matter now. I predict it shall matter some day.

You will 'discover; the purpose of the gap/lever in the knob when it is time to tension the belt. Yes it should be spring loaded 'out'.

Some of us persist in calling things what we think things are. Others insist upon reading parts lists. Somewhere in between works.(the parts list 'editors' are often not very precise nor helpful).

As I get older...... It all comes slowly..... It seems...

OK.. I went down and played with the "Jointer". It works, took me only a few minutes to figure out the way the blade holder is in there. Removed it, cleaned the blocks on each end and reassembled. Figured out how the fence attaches and lock on and in position. Fire it up on slow and worked my speeds up and ran a board through it........ Did well considering the blades and bed still need to be cleaned up........

It might get used after all!!! Need the piece that holds the work to the fence though, or does it just cover the blades? Anyway it's not there. Theres also another hole in the bed at the end of the fence, does something go there? Will have to see if I can find a jointer manual online somewhere.

What is missing is a blade cover(think safety).

'Normally it fits into the 'outboard' hex shaped hole.


When rabbeting, it is moved to the other hole so it covers the blades(now exposed) behind the fence. The newer models have a fixed 'normal' blade guard and a fixed rear guard.

I encourage you to look into evaporust and electrolytic rust removal rather than the abrasive method.

You mentioned this earlier, What would you recommend?

Hopefully something I can get at Lowes or Home depot.

Evaporust is available at Harbor Freight and some other stores. It works great when used as directed. Will not harm solid metal, though it may darken it a tad.

Auto Zone(small size). Lowes has discontinued it(I got many pints for less than $2 apiece IIRC when they dumped remaining stock - got most of it in Sevierville, TN of all places).

I have never observed it at HD.

Evaporust for small parts, electrolysis for bulky items(like tubes and panels). BTW electrolysis removes paint also. Not so well on later paints.
