Also more time between passes by the workpiece(less heat buildup in the belt). JMHO, one reason I prefer the aluminum/psa disks is better heat dissipation.

FWIW, the disk(flat) has a built in variable 'feet per minute' feature without changing rotational speed. Faster at the periphery and slower at the center. ;) Also auto reverse(sorta). :D
What's that disc area, again? ;) :D

Any differences between 'current' model and 'original' Magna model are minimal.

You're in luck. There's a manual you can download at VintageMachinery.org. http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/detail.aspx?id=6083

It sounds like yours has been configured with a pulley for a belt drive to a standard motor, which is exactly what Shopsmith does on it's "Power Stands". Here's a page with belt-drive instructions: http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/productmanuals.htm. There's a table giving recommended pulley sizes in both the Mounting Base and the Pulley Guard manuals (under "Other Information Manuals"). Note that those tables assume a 1750 RPM motor.
