10E Restoration

Gorgeous! Did you polish the old pulleys, or buy the new machined ones from Skip at MKC? If you polished them, what was your process?

The pulleys are the original ones that came on the machine. I scrubbed the all the gunk off the pulleys with a wire brush, not scrubbing too hard that i left heavy scratch marks. They were then mounted on a shaft made from a bolt and secured using the grub screw, the shaft and pulley was held and slowly spun on the lathe to polish using mag wheel cleaner. I only took one photo of the polished and half cleaned pulley, not the whole process tho. Hope this helps.

BTW it is a 10ER.

What is the difference between the 10E and ER series? Are they very subtle? I was assuming it is a 10E as there is no 'R' stamped on the logo plate next to the serial number?

Based on the serial number, I'd say that the headstock is a 10E. The fence is also the earlier style. But some of the other components, notably the extension table and bracket, may have been upgraded to the ER style.

The odd thing to me is that your pivot base is the "squared off" version. My 10E has the round pivot base, and my 10ER has the "squared off" style like yours. Magna didn't make all the changes at one time, and apparently didn't change over all production of a given component at the same time either.

I recently bought 10E serial number 1750 myself. It came with the 10ER upgrade tailstock, extension table, and bracket, and also with the original 10E parts.

The main table is 10ER also.

First we must acknowledge that the serial number is not likely Magna Engineering defined, but rather by whoever assembled the parts down under.

As for 10E/ER differences the following are tell tale signs.

The return spring housing on a 10E is a plain can with no scale cast in.

The aux table is metal with a rail like the main table on a ER and is wood on a E.

The mounting bracket for that table is different. The tailstock is different to accommodate the different bracket. The mt2 socket is cast into the tailstock on a E and not adjustable like the ER.

The E rip fence only clamped at the front rail and attached to the aux table by two vertical studs.

The miter gauge is different and the trunion 45/90 detents are different.

Other details evolved over time and are not a distinguishing detail between 10E and 10ER, but are mostly done during ER production.

This is quite interesting, after seeing the pics in the survey done by skip and comparing to the 2 10E/ER's I have I'm starting wondering if things were done a bit different in Australia when they were manufactured or assembled here .

While I have been searching for parts and accessories for my machines I have come across 4 others in Australia that were described as 10E, 2 of which I still have photos of. All of the machines had the headrest that accepts the jointer. The pivot base is also the "squared off" version.

Both of my machines have a slightly different carriage/headstock locks to the pics in the survey. They are 1 piece but have the large hole on the back, they look like the 2 piece with the outside wedge missing.

I believe they were licensed to be manufactured in Australia, and as you say there are certainly some design changes that are unique to there.

Regarding the nameplate showing "Model 10E", when they transitioned from 10E to 10ER they still had a quantity of the original nameplates in stock and they used them up before getting new ones.

I have two 10ERs and one has a plate the same as yours,

Coincidentally, I ran across thread on line of a 10ER being restored in Australia. Woodworkingtalk.com - Shopsmith up and almost running
In post #12 he says

Oh and I took the belts off. I cant see the point in tensioner and double belt thing.

ie the speed changer.
It might be worthwhile contacting him to see if he would sell it.

Nice job! I have a 10E model #1414 that I'm planning on cleaning up. I'm currently working on my 1954 Greenie so won't be doing both at once. My 10E also has several 10ER upgrades on it, so I'm assuming it must be a common thing.

And, I can see someone getting later version parts, because the E model
stuff (sorry E model aficionados) is not as good.

My first Model 10, was (I think) an E model, updated. Name plate said
10 E, but the serial number was R-24996. It came with the ER model extension
table, (with bracket) as well as an E model bracket, had only the ER tailstock.
Also had the short rip fence, without the humpback adapter. Were other differences,
too.

I consider all the changes made to be improvements.(except the slanted rip fence clamping screw).

We agree. ESPECIALLY, on that slanted rip fence screw!

On a side note, my brother got a Model 10, that had been
completely updated. The 10 E tailstock was almost complete,
only missing the "extension table, but had the bracket. I took
a piece of scrap 1X4, attached it to the ext table bracket, and
drilled a bunch of holes into it, to hold lathe chisels. Mounted
the (now) headstock to the left end, so the lathe chisels were
right at hand. (Since it was a Model 10, I couldn't put a sanding
disc and table, for sharpening lathe tools, so I put the tools there.)
