I picked up a SS surface planer yesterday. Price was too good to pass up. Its the mount on the SS version. But it brings up a point. The price was really low and my buddy who picked it up for me (I was out of town) brought up an interesting question. Is there a data base of stolen SS machines and SPT's ? This is the second time in two weeks I have come across a new or nearly new SS and SPT for next to nothing. Just a thought.

Re: 12" Planer
There is no data base that I know of. But even if there was, the Shopsmith equipment is tagged with serial numbers in such a way that the number can be very easily removed. There would be no way to positively identify any specific piece of equipment with the serial number tag removed.

Re: 12" Planer
One way to deal with "no serial number" would be like paperback books: if no cover, it is likely stolen.

Good point Forrest. Rose is a rose. But on the other hand we are supposing the thiefs are smart enough to remove the serial numbers ! All of mine have had the serial numbers on them. Hmmm.

A production date code is neither a serial number nor a unique identifier.masonsailor2 wrote:Good point Forrest. Rose is a rose. But on the other hand we are supposing the thiefs are smart enough to remove the serial numbers ! All of mine have had the serial numbers on them. Hmmm.
