10er 1/2 hp motor wiring question.

Post by Calltolman »

I've been cleaning and tuning up my shopsmith 10er, and I've gotten to the original motor. It's in good shape, but I noticed that at the top where the bracket is (to attach to head stock) that there was a wire that was pinched between the end of the motor cap and the motor body itself. I am wondering if that is on purpose? Earlier, while the motor was running, I touched the way bar and the metal base and it shocked me.

Did the 10ER use a two wire electrical circuit? If so reverse polarity of the Hot and Neutral may be a cause of a shock hazard. Some of the older radio equipment that I had, the neutral was connected to the chassis and was a definite shock hazard.

I believe there are only two wires. The plug is original, the motor, everything is.

Sounds like a good time to replace the power cord. ;)
The easiest way is to get a heavy duty (12 or 14 gauge) grounded extension cord and cut off the female plug.
I used a 15' 12 gauge extension cord when I re wired both of mine.
If I were to do it again I would run the cord to an outlet box mounted on the bench and then a short cord from there to the headstock/motor, that would give me a place to plugin my work light. :)
