New Used Shopsmith Questions

Post by BrotherSquint »

I just became the proud owner of a Mark V. It's used but seems well-cared for judging from the fact that the purchase included all the original paperwork right down to the packing list and typewritten thank you from John Folkerth. I have no idea how long it's sat or how much use it got. I'm guessing not much. What would the the forum recommend I do first in terms of maintenance. Any lubricants or techniques you'd recommend? Anything you'd give specific attention to? Thanks in advance for your response!

Welcome, Bro!
Hopefully the documentation included a manual. Read it and follow instructions regarding lubrication.

Read the first post titled "Newowner Information" in this Maintenance and Repair Section.

Don't be afraid to get inside and look, either. Bag and label things you take off, but you won't end up with a useless pile of unknown parts (hmmm.. Brings back childhood memories of my dad's lawnmower engine). They are made to be owner maintained because they are made to be used and to last, not just fail so you but another.
I bought a pair of them with some good accessory tools for cheap, hoping they'd be worth salvaging. The price reflected their condition. I didn't know much at all about them but with all the information and great guidance here I've brought them back to life.
Just under the new owner thread is a thread with a motherload of links to detailed maintenance and repair threads. That is useful as you move forward.
