Grandson's shield

Made a shield for my grandson for when he uses his Mutant Turtle sword. I still haven't decided if I will get my wife to paint one of the turtles on the front. I did however put a fleur de lis on the front. Finished with natural Watco. Trying to decide if I will make edges black. I have left room to slide blotter under fdl if I decide to paint.

Well, finished the shield except for clear. I painted edges of shield black and the edge of the raised fleur de lis black. My wife painted Michael Angelo on the fleur de lis. I think he will really like it.

Perfect! What wood species did you use, by the way?

Believe it or not it was some sanded 1/4" plywood from a big box store. I picked it because of the grain for the repeating rubber band rifle I had mad and this was left over. I rarely see a piece with this character in it.

Very nice indeed! The only improvement I can see, is in the actual functionality of it. It could use the handle moved more to the right side and then a softer (leather) strap across from it. You slide the arm thru the strap and then hold onto the other handle. Thereby, in the natural act of "blocking", the whole forearm is used to support the shield.

The only reason I say this, is I recently took my grandsons to Medieval Times. I bought them lighted swords and the wooden shields and the shields were constructed that way. Your shield is definitely more elaborate.

Sounds like good ideas. My main goal was to make it kinda light as he is a bit rambunctious and I was thinking about his opponent also I wanted to put one our Saints Fleur De Lis.

Very neat project. My thoughts went to Scouting I guess almost immediately, followed by the badge of wood and "Wood Badge and thinking there is a patrol of folks here in the forums that it would be an honor and privilege to spend a week with. There's a mountain top experience I would treasure.

Nice job. I can imagine your grandson' s eyes said all that needed to be said.
