Speed control and ???

Post by dsinsley »

So I started a thread under general woodworking but it quickly turned to maintenance and repair and inspection. So I decide to move the thread here.

So I was going to tear down my machine and clean and inspect it but I wanted to get one last little project done first well big mistake. Now instead of inspection and maintenance I am now in repair mode.

While turning a piece of wood there was a rattle and then the machine began to speed up rather quickly. I grabbed the speed control to slow it down and that was a bad idea as I went to slow it down it instantly went bast slow to fast. This tells me the stop as no longer working. Well then there were some terrible noises and I hit the switch and began the tear down process.

I decided I would take it all apart and thoroughly inspect. So far I dropped the motor and it was very hot. It was filthy so I took it out of the pan blew it out and vacuumed it out and blew and vacd. it is clean now and turns smooth. took off the spring and sheave. It did not want to move easily. A little cleaning of the shaft and a little light tapping and it came off. I cleaned the shaft and sheave with PB blaster and everything looks great. Dried it thoroughly and waxed and buffed out the shaft. Put it back together and it sides very nice now. I am pleased with that. I am sure the heating problem was due to a very dirty motor. We will see. Bench tested the motor and it sounds and looks good. Cord and wiring all look very good.

Now for the top end. As i was pulling the motor I came up with pieces  looking inside the speed control is basically none existent. It exploded. That's where I am now. I need to tear it all down and see what needs to be done.

So chime in please on advice. Wondering if the previous owner turned the speed dial without it running? What happens when you do that, know its not a good thing?

I am now looking over the sawdust videos to help me with the tear down process.

Ok tear down is complete everything cleaned and inspected. The damage is limited to the "pork chop" (that is what the dude on the sawdust thing calls it) and all the associated parts, also the shaft that the pork chop clips into is toast. The end where the pork chop clips into is bust clean off.

Everything else looks to be in great shape. The teeth on the speed control are all there. None of the shafts are galled or scored. Once everything was cleaned and waxed and buffed it all went smooth. All the bearings appear good spin free and smooth.

One question is answered and the play I was experiencing in the Quill is I believe do to the fact that it is a single bearing quill. That will need to be up graded but likely not on this go around since I have these other repairs. The poly v belt is good the drive belt will get replaced.

So all in all I am pleased with my purchase. I just wish I would have listened to advice and inspected before playing.

OK I am confused. In looking at the diagram my idler shaft is fine. And that makes sense now that I think about how it operates. But what is broken then? There is nothing left on the control sheave to attache to the quadrant assembly. So If i am looking at the diagram right I need a control sheave assembly and a quadrant assembly. Does this sound right? The speed control bracket and the worm gear are all fine. The aluminum arm tat ha the teeth that ride on the worm gear is toast. So from that part to the control sheave is DOA. I hope my ramblings make sense and someone can help enlighten me.

You might want to watch the video that is referenced in this thread. The video, in conjunction with the comments in the thread, will most likely get you back in business.

Yes, if the gear teeth on the pork chop are bad speed control will be negatively impacted.

There are a number of other useful and applicable videos referenced on the utube page that you should consider watching.

OK figured it out I think. I went back and watched the video for repairing the head stock again and I see what happened. The bearing in the control sheave is not present as in exploded. So that is why I could not see how things were attached. So need both the control sheave assembly and the quadrant arm assembly and a new drive belt and I should be golden.

About the only thing left on the pork chop that was good was the teeth. the arm is busted completely in half and the spring is chewed up and off. thanks for the advice I have watched the sawdust videos referenced but going back and watching them again answered my question

You likely have the entire speed control mechanism removed. When you put it all back together, be prepared to perform the high speed adjustment. This is not a difficult task but a necessary one The Sawdust Sessions provide guidance if required. Or questions posted here will get you the guidance needed.

That's good advice. I saw it done on the sawdust video and agree that would be necessary. Thanks for the help

IIUC, the control sheave is a goner. A broken quadrant gear is unusual, but seems consistent with your description of it breaking down.

With that kind of damage to the quadrant gear, the arms that it attaches to and pivots are likely at least bent. If they can be returned to normal, ok.

If not add

513700 Speed Control Bracket ... $24.36.

Bill Mayo has a kit of parts that improves upon the tension pin pivot shaft.

The arms where the quadrant gear attaches to the speed control bracket appears fine to me. Not having anything to compare it to it seems to fit the arm correctly and I can screw the arm in and out to its fullest extent with ease. Now I admit that I have nothing other than my own observation to base that on.[/b]

can you explain first what pieces we are up grading and who Bill Mayo is? Forgive my ignorance, I am not sure what you mean by the "tension pivot pin shaft"
