A quiet dust collector?
I'm waiting for my perfect SS to appear on Craigs List. In the meantime, I need to think about what I'm going to do for dust collection. My space is around 12' x 12'. I know these things are all noisy, but still, I would prefer to get one that is as quiet as possible. Any suggestions? I've seen the SS DC but never in action - how loud is it?

Re: A quiet dust collector?
The DC3300 Dust Collector is noisy. It generates about the same level of noise as does the Mark V running at high speed (not cutting). The Power Station without an SPT mounted is "quiet" by comparison.
Average Home......45db
Power Station.......78db
Band Saw............82db
Mark V...............84db
DC3300..............84db
If you run the Dust Collector and the Mark V together it might be said that "you can not hear yourself think".
Do yourself a favor and buy ear muffs or ear plugs for use in the shop.

Vac impellers and siren impellers share many common design 'features'. Think of the DC as a low frequency siren. Not as noisy as a shop vac, but still noisy. I would put as about the same as the SS, but 'different'.

I like my 330cfm DC3300 because it reminds me of the old days when we'd open up a 4bbl carburetor on a V8 and hear 300-500 cfm of "moan" through that baby!

My almost 2000 CFM 5 HP Clear Vue cyclone is only about 78DB. Hmmm... I have never used a SS DC but have seen them in use at many SS demos. They don't seem that noisy to me. In fact I thought they were pretty quiet and efficient for a single machine connection.dusty wrote:The DC3300 Dust Collector is noisy. Nobody knows what noise is until you are at the end of the runway doing a last check on an F-16 and then he hits after burner about 500' away when taking off. We wore ear plugs and ear muffs. When we launched F-111F aircraft with two engines in after burner it would actually shake the 6 Pak we were sitting in.
24 years around jet engines is why I have a high frequency hearing loss today.
I guess my point is that noise level is subjective depending on your experience. That in no way suggests that you should not wear hearing protection. Absolutely do it.

I like that. Never thought about it, but it does sound like that.nuhobby wrote:I like my 330cfm DC3300 because it reminds me of the old days when we'd open up a 4bbl carburetor on a V8 and hear 300-500 cfm of "moan" through that baby!

Aw, I just sold my 62 Ford Falcon with a 302 4 barrell and headers... Now I miss it! ( and no, it started life as a six-banger!)
