Yikes, I have the wrong 10er motor 3450 rpm not 1725!

As I have been restoring this 10e/er Shopsmith (that part is going well, tubes are clean and cast iron parts are clean and being painted) I noticed that the motor that came on it is a 3/4hp 3450RPM Westinghouse motor not 1725 RPM. The pulleys on the headstock and motor are the same size with the smallest step about 2 inches, next size about 2.75 and large size about 4 inches. Can I use this motor or do I need to shop for a new one or will I have the fastest spinning Shopsmith around? When I ran it to test the machine at its highest speed I did not think it was too fast...

My 1953 Craftsman bandsaw has a 1/2 hp 1725 RPM motor on it I could borrow for testing speeds if needed if shaft size is the same..

I would be hesitant to use it as is. But you may conduct a search to find a set of step pullys that would provide the proper speed ratios. The generally accepted speed for a table saw blade is 3450 RPM, it is the other functions that would present a problem. Drilling, lathe turning, sanding etc.

If I ran the numbers correctly, your max spindle speed with the 3450 RPM motor would still be less that you can get with a 1725 RPM motor plus a speed changer. So I'd agree that it is "not too fast", in that sense. The problem is that you lose the bottom end of your RPM range, which would limit operations such as lathe turning and drilling with large Forstner bits, like Bill said.
