Can SS not get the invoice date (or at least a date of sale range if more than one share the mfg date) from the mfg date stated June 10 2013?
Do you know if it is month - day or day - month on yours?
I' guessing it is Jan 8 rather than August 1 because of the above model number clues but unless someone can chime in with a date using a number greater than twelve, it would be a guess.

You can guess all you want but date conventions are well established and have been for a long time. Nobody switches Y/M/D around, it depends on where you live and the convention they follow. I spent 24 years on active duty with the Air Force and another 12 years as an AF civilian. Dates were either Y/M/D (always in the military) or D/M/Y (European). It is always left or right and you have to know where the date came from.

There is no ambiguity in date if you understand the convention.

Sorry about the confusion. I live half my year in Az where my bank and most other (civilian) institutions use month-day-year and the other half in my native Canada where I was raised on day-month-year. Never been in the military. This was my first experience with the year first.

That is at least the source of my confusion. Thank you for clearing it up. Next time I run into a year first set, I will know.

Actually JPG, outside the USA, day-month-year is pretty universal to the best of my knowledge......... which admittedly may be sadly lacking. :-)

Anyway it doesn't have any bearing on this discussion.

The salient points as I see them are that if the warrantee is even compromised by one year the value drops to IMHO less than the automated, motivated bidder is willing to pay.
and ... the only way to fix that would be to convince SS to honour the full warrantee because it has in fact never been out of the box. but.... It is directly opposed to their interests (selling me a new one at full price) to do so.
All that taken into account I have decided that I' m out

The "convention" is of no importance here. The significant factor is "how does Shopsmith read that date".

Gents, I think your all putting too much thought into the warranty angle. When I thought I might toss my bid in, I had assumed worst case (a) all the high price parts were there (picture seems to indicate that) and only the minor low cost parts were possibly missing and (b) the warranty basically doesn't exist. In both cases the reality is that I've a high probability of either (a) and/or (b) assumptions are conservative.

Given those two assumptions, and making the assumption I could have gotten it for <$850 or about 50% of the new price, I would have had $850 to deal with any (a) and/or (b) issues that cropped up. Now that its past 50%, I think I'm better off just buying new from Shopsmith.

As for expecting to get information from Shopsmith, I would guess they have their company privacy guidelines and I don't think there is much incentive for them to go beyond them. They want to sell these things and from their point of view this particular unit has already been sold, they've already made all the money they are ever going to make on it. Shopsmith starts incurring warranty liability when someone buys it and installs it. On the hand I don't think they want to be jerks about it either, as they have a loyal fan base so they are honoring the warranty.

Good luck whoever buys it.

To clarify the part numbers, there are four ways to get PowerPro Upgrade and each method has its own part number.

556189 Refurbished PowerPro Headstock ... $1,949.00
556178 Your Headstock Reconditioned and Upgraded to PowerPro ... $1,749.00
556177 Do-It-Yourself PowerPro Upgrade Kit ... $1,649.00

I think folks have got a bit invested in the serial number issue relative to the Do-It-Yourself Upgrade for sale on eBay and not having done one of these myself, or even one of the others than New Headstock, I have a question for those of you who have.

556176 New PowerPro Headstock ... New Shopsmith Headstock , New Serial Number understood

556189 Refurbished PowerPro Headstock ... Shopsmith supplied Used Headstock from Shopsmith sources (Was there a New Number reflecting Mark 7?)

556178 Your Headstock Reconditioned and Upgraded to PowerPro ... Your Mark V Serial Number (Was there a New Mark 7 Number when it came back?)

556177 Do-It-Yourself PowerPro Upgrade Kit ... No Serial Number - Where you upgraded your existing unit (Was there a New Mark 7 Number provided to you?)

Since the item in question for sale is the latter DIY, if it indeed comes with no new Mark 7 serial number, it is entirely a matter of who they sold it to and what zip code they shipped it to as many components in the kit may well have varying dates of manufacture, obfuscating a true date, other than original date of sale.

The Original Date of Sale starts warranty that will establish the date Shopsmith seeks to identify as to which specific Do-It-Yourself Upgrade it is they need to transfer warranty on, and to whom.

For those of you who have previously done the Do-It-Yourself Upgrade or one of the others that upgraded an older headstock, did Shopsmith provide you a new serial number sticker for your headstock to change the serial number on it to a Mark 7 from a Mark V?

That information should help us with Serial Number issues somewhat, realizing that EVEN TODAY one can swap a vent cover plate with serial number, or a belt cover plate, and effectively change the apparent serial number of a machine, Mark V or Mark 7.

Shopsmith never to my knowledge stamped the serial number in the castings. I don't know why they chose not to.

We were in this nation by in large, a more trustworthy people when Shopsmith / Magna / Yuba first came on the scene. Those in this forum are very likely by in large, from or much closer to that generation of values and hold that respect, honesty, fair dealing, and a hand-shake as all it takes to deal with each other.

On an unrelated note, relative to a very large company John Deere, for decades the key that started every tractor, great and small, was the same ignition key. We were a more trustworthy people when John Deere did as well.

A slightly less related note, the key for a Mark VII and the key for a SawSmith are all the same, hence the "YPP" * code.

I did the DIY upgrade on my Mark V 510. There were new safety stickers in the kit BUT NO NEW SERIAL NUMBERS.
