I did the DIY upgrade on my Mark V 510. There were new safety stickers in the kit BUT NO NEW SERIAL NUMBERS. :D

---
That seems to answer the question of why SS wants to know the name of the purchaser and where it was received since no serial number exists to establish warranty.

Just a question to help stir the pot.

What if I buy a PowerPro upgrade kit and have it delivered to my house with the intention of giving to someone as a gift and that that kit is immediately transported to a location other than where it was delivered.

Warranty or No Warranty and in Whose Name?

It seems as though Shopsmith would streamline this process some. It would be as simple as providing a serial number either with the kit or attached to one of the major sub-assemblies of the PowerPro kit.

Having a SN adds to the process. Records in addition to the sales date/recipient would need to be recorded. i.e. the SN is an additional thing to keep track of.

As for the 'final' recipient, the original recipient/date is all that matters.

Since that is all that matters, that is why SS needed it.

??? I have is: How do they know what the 'recipient' has today with an 'issue' is the same unit as the one in their date/recipient records. :D

You know after following this thread from day one it seems to indicate an almost absurd problem.

Having worked for Waukesha Motor Co for 19 years and Caterpillar for 20 years, neither company would dream of letting major assemblies leave the premises without a serial number. It's hard for me to imagine that SS would rely on a last name and zip code to try and keep track of assemblies. I have an extra box of stencils and an engraver I would be glad to ship to them if they are that hard up. If nothing else put a sales ticket number on the item.

Earlier I said there is no new serial number, however just remembered there is a paper sticker on the side of the power unit. On re-built units it has initials (I assumed of the technician). There may also be a date - I forgot. The sticker can be viewed by removing the inspection cover. Later, I'll look for a date on that sticker.

Also noticed the sticker colors are different for each re-build/

It's up to $1,051 this morning. If I'm right in my reckoning that's about $500 short of the new, full warrantee price and almost certainly with no warrantee on the electronics an limited warrantee on the rest. ........ If warrantee can even be established.
I doubt if anyone with access to the discussions here would be bidding that high. If they are they get a tip of my hat as a true risk taker.

Delivery is easy. Backing up the warranty 'properly' is the hard part. A SN makes that easier. ;)
