What Is This?

This came in a box of Shopsmith "stuff" that I obtained recently. Can anyone tell me what it is? (See attached photo)

It is part of a steady rest. Used to back up long thin spindles on the lathe. There should be some kind of socket for it to fit into, or an adjustable shaft.

Thanks Jim...that makes since I do have an extra shaft. Does anyone have a photo of this in use on the lathe or know where I can see one?

You have all the parts that you need, the wheels are adjustable for different diameter spindles. In order to use this you need a second tool rest banjo (the part the tool reset fits into) and you mount it behind the unit. If you care still confused I can send you a picture later today, I am actually using it on my lathe right now.

With all the parts and shafts, you should be able to place the steady rest on the opposite side of the tool rest and into the carriage. This allows the pressure from the chisels on a thin spindle to be put against the wheels of the steady rest, keeping the spindle from vibrating and breaking.
