A man's word is not what it used to be.

A man's word is not what it used to be.
I caught this just a couple of hours after he posted it. Emailed and said I could not make the 3hr trip until Saturday, he emailed back and said that would be OK and would hold it for me. I emailed back for address to night and he said it was sold. Had I known I would have made time to go get it today.

That's rotten and a heck of a loss on a bargain. I had a similar thing happen a couple years back, was going to drive to Dallas for an item, but couldn't do until the weekend. Guy said he'd hold. Call the day before and he'd sold it. After learning more about the item, turns out that was a good thing for me that I didn't get it and a few weeks later got a much better item locally.

I'm with the sellers on this one. Buyers are liars. I've had more people who really, really, really want something and want me to hold it and then don't show. I've learned that in selling I tell people that the first one to get here gets it.

db, I agree. First come, first served.

I guess I agree that the best answer is "first come, first serve" but I also am committed to my word. If I tell you I will hold it until you arrive, believe me, it will be there when you arrive.

Dusty I agree with you, the integrity of this nation is on the decline. At one time a man's word was his bond. Today in many cases it is as worthless as a 3 dollar bill. It goes for both buyers and sellers.dusty wrote:I guess I agree that the best answer is "first come, first serve" but I also am committed to my word. However I believe if this man's word was a worthless as has been proven then his description of what he was selling was just as worthless. Be glad you didn't get it, it probably was used as a boat anchor then cleaned up and sold as like new.

I didn't even see this ad until it was posted here. However, whoever buys it for that price is getting a number of items that will easily return his/her investment. The speed control alone (assuming it works after being under water as a boat anchor) is worth the stated investment.

I agree "first come, first serve" but he could have told the person that he had someone coming to see it and if I did not take it the second person would be in line to get it and I am sure the second person would wait. I have been told that before and the first person did not buy it so I got it.

Another thing 'not' understood today is 'first refusal'.joedw00 wrote:I agree "first come, first serve" but he could have told the person that he had someone coming to see it and if I did not take it the second person would be in line to get it and I am sure the second person would wait. Promises seem to mean nada.
There is enough 'blame' to go around.(the buyer promised to never shows).
Sadly one must assume the 1C1S attitude to protect one's self and one's veracity.
My desire would be to promise to hold, and expect the buyer to show up as promised by them. My desires have nothing to do with how I would act. I would promise to hold for a given duration. Any third party would be promised 'second. . .' refusal and called by me after the first no-showed or declined.
I may get stuck with the 'goods', but would retain my honor and self respect!

Exactly. If the seller wants to sell on first come/first sold basis, then they should so state.JPG wrote:joedw00 wrote:My desire would be to promise to hold, and expect the buyer to show up as promised by them.
