UPDATE: It is not cracked. It was dirt on it.

Additionally, the spring that is linked to the quill is in fact, not operating properly.

If I rotate the lever (that brings the quill, in or out) there is a twang sound, coming from this spring.
Therefore, this same spring "must be" sprung.

I had my Mark V, all apart on Saturday and found nothing in disrepair, except this non functioning spring.

Must order a new one and pay $6.99 for shipping again. Yay! Can not wait to get robbed again, for shipping!

I agree with JPG's earlier comment.
JPG wrote:Before ordering a new spring, get in there and see if the spring merely departed from the quill feed shaft. A common occurrence if not consciously prevented.
The inner end of the spring has a keyhole shaped slot that fits over a stud on the shaft.
The most common cause of your problem is that the shaft gets turned too far in the wrong direction and the spring comes off the stud.
This video shows how to re attach.

And here is a thread showing how ddvann79 repaired his. Quill Spring Woes
The first post has a good picture showing all the parts.

If the spring is broken however it usually breaks at the next to the slot at the end and can be repaired by drilling a new hole.
I had to do that on the quill spring of my 10ER and it wasn't a problem. there are pictures of how I did it in this thread Quill Spring Replacement

Have fun
