One final pass over the jointer removes the saw marks and cleans up the edge for gluing. Now I have 4 flat, straight and parallel surfaces.

This is a very critical step. Notice I have marked the grain direction on the ends of the boards and alternated the direction. Well with the exception of one board that has a bad place. I had to yield to the better side.

I like to use dominoes or biscuits for alignment. Just make sure you place them where they will not be cut into later.

A good flat surface is needed for the clamping. Make sure to clamp both top and bottom for even clamp pressure. I dont worry about trying to remove the squeeze out until it has been clamped for 2 hours. At that time you can use a glue scraper and it will easily come off. Dont wait to long though or it will dry to much and tear the grain of the joint when scraping.

Now some of you will notice that I did not use the guards on my jointer. I am a professional and do not recommend doing this at home. These were fairly large pieces but if they were small I would take time to set up the guard. As with any multi use tool such as the Shopsmith and my CU300 the guards are not always in place when you are ready to work. Please take time to set yours!
