That is beautiful and the dovetail is cool. What's the variation from the standard board from a bowl technique to get the dovetail?

That is WAY cool and absolutely beautiful! Did you just put the boards together with dove tails and glue them together into a block or did you cut the dovetailed boards individually on a ring master?wa2crk wrote:OK OK so it is a bowl from two boards!!!

OK I guess that a brief description is in line.
The first step is to have two boards that are the same width and thickness and length but different species. Then machine a sliding dovetail joint along one edge of the boards and slide them together.
At the center of the boards draw a circle about 3" in diameter and then draw concentric circles every inch.
The two boards can now be separated. The circumference of the outer circle is cut with the bandsaw set at 90 deg. The rest of the circles are cut with the bandsaw set to about 40 to 45 deg.
The half circles are then joined with their mating counterparts by gluing and sliding the dovetails together. I use large hose clamps to secure the halves while the glue sets up. The rings are the flattened using a planer or in my case a drum sander, and then assembled and glued into a stack and left to cure at least overnight.
There is one pitfall to avoid. When cutting the rings that have the male side of the dovetail make sure to line the cut line up with blade. It will appear that you will be cutting way too wide due to an optical illusion, but you are not. Remember that the pin of the dovetail will be embedded in the tail of the adjoining piece and disappear.
Now that I have most likely confused everyone, good night.

No I did not take any pics of the process but I do have some of the cutoffs and I will post pics when I am back from vacation.
I may have to do another one and do a photo essay.

Coulda(did) fool me. One must look VERY CLOSE to see the grain pattern change at the joints.
So ONE dovetail joint(cut into multiple pieces). Very ingenous!!!
