The case of the bird house caper

Post by reible »

When I went out this morning I noticed a large number of bits of plastic, and other nest building materials found here in the area. They were under one of my birdhouses so when I looked up.........

Something had raided the nest box. I found no eggs or shells, no feathers to speak of, no dead bodies or evidence of anything being eaten. The owners were quite distracted but in the area checking things out too.

I had to get a pole to remove the hanging fluff, it had gotten caught on the roost. So I picked up what I found and then started to think about what might have happened. I know that other Ed would have blamed the squirrels but I wasn't too sure about that.

So I called in CSI team, that being me, and I started looking for evidence. There it was, stuck on the trellis, a piece of fur. I examined it and I'm pretty sure it is from a raccoon. Using my CSI camera I took a picture of it for your inspection.

I'm 99.9% sure of the fur and pretty sure I know who did this. We have seen him/her in the area and this is just the kind of thing they do. Now I have to decide what I need to do in response. Hate to have to take down the house but once they know about it then will be back. Maybe I need to bait it and have the game camera setup to watch things unfold or not.

Seems it might have been the night of the raccoon's last night. One of my brothers who lives about 400 miles north of my sent this message.

"Guess what , Raccoon got my baby wrens last night also !!"

I my case it was sparrows but still that is odd.
