Rockler Sandpaper Cutter (ripper) mini review

A while back I got one of these from Rockler

and while it seemed interesting I found I wasn't using it as much as the old standby. When I got to thinking just why that was it came to me that the edges of the metal were not all the smooth and I didn't like the feel of it in my hand. I also worried that I would scratch things when I set it down on a surface, yea the same edges were a worry for that as well.

About a week ago I decided to mount it on a small piece of plywood. This took care of the edges and makes it nicer to handle. It has the hole for doing that so it was a simple matter of doing it.

Now it was nice to have the "scale" paper on the front so it is easy to rip a half sheets etc. I could have added that to my old method but never did. Anyway I do like that.

Now my old method was a pull down to make the rip, this is a pull up. That took a little getting use to but I guess up/down doesn't really make any big difference. I had hoped that this was a bit more fool proof as I can sometime get a little carried away thinking about other things rather then concentrating on what needs to be done. When I do that I get these little tares....

I've been using it a lot more of late and it has been a nice addition. The price is a little high for what it is but I got it on sale which made it a lot better value.

Now the question is what do I do with my old hacksaw blades not that I don't need them for a sandpaper cutter?

I think I will stick with my templates of 1/4 ply and a stanley knife !

And I with my hands alone! Well perhaps also a putty knife to press the folds tighter. Everything I have that uses sandpaper sheets requires an even fraction of a full sheet.

Cut them in thirds, sandwich and epoxy 6 pieces together with the teeth staggered and you have a poor man's rasp! For a handle we used to wrap one end with cloth electrical tape (remember that stuff?!) or white athletic tape.

When a fine tooth bandsaw blade broke and brazing it back together was not plausible, we would do the same thing, though we got 5 or 6 rasps out of one blade.

No. it is not an elegant solution but you just asked for what to do... not what is a "good" thing to do!
