Dogwood

Post by boco »

Does anyone have experience working with dogwood? We had a tree come down last night. It is about 22 inches in circumference near the base, 15" at the mid-point (so around 4" in diameter with the bark off), and (was) about 25 feet tall. From some quick Googling I get the impression that the wood is dense, tough on blades, and not particularly interesting to look at, but makes excellent tool handles. Which would be great ... if I needed tool handles. I plan to set aside a chunk to turn into pens as an experiment. Ideas for other uses would be most welcome. Thanks!

Get it cut up and seal the ends. Otherwise it will split with vigor. I have some drying for a year now waiting to be made into a finger joint box.

I remember reading that dogwood is very tough and impact-resistant, the wood of choice for flying shuttles on old textile looms. Here's an article with some history on that.

So maybe some nice woodworking mallets?

Great article. Thanks! Too bad the market for dogwood roller skate wheels has collapsed. :D I like the mallet idea. I also read somewhere that dogwood makes good bows, so I may try one of those as well. I'll chop the trunk into storable lengths tomorrow, seal them up, and let the waiting begin....
