Another 10er Craigslist question

Post by RodJ »

At the risk of someone else seeing this and beating me to it (as if shopsmith people don't already spend 23 hours a day scouring craigslist ;) ), does this look like a decent deal?

http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/tls/5106414074.html

I don't even know how to use a lathe so would likely sell most of the lathe tools to offset the price. The machine itself looks good and has the speed changer.

I have a new to me Mark V that I am just getting used to, but to my eye the 10er is beautiful and kind of want one for the nostalgia factor. Even if SWMBO will kill me.

What say the experts?

I do not thank anyone here will 'beat you to it'.

I do not know what the lathe chisels are worth(or what they might bring), but over all I think the price is still too high.

However my opinion is not what matters, yours does.

Other than the speed control, nothing else stands out(the curved tool rest does not count since you are a stranger to a lathe ;) ).

Thanks I was thinking the same thing on price. It looks well kept / maintained compared to almost all others I've seen. That made the price more palatable. I need another "project" like I need another...

Can anyone explain the allure of the old machines? Even greenies and goldies.

Back to coffee and plotting out my Saturday.

The price of these things vary a lot by your locality from what I can tell. The prices that guys can pick them up in the Southeast makes me jealous! LOL

Don't sell off the chisels, learn to turn! I just purchased a 10E and someday that is going to happen. At least give turning the college try.

Make a offer. The worst they can do is turn you down.

I see what looks like a pretty nice unit with a jigsaw. Sometimes it is a bit smarter to pay a little more upfront than get a project cheap. I have learned that the hard way! LOL But if you pass, there will be another down the road. You don't need it today!

I still need a 10ER, a goldie, and of course a power pro........ LOL

I agree with ddub - learn to turn.

There are several woodturning clubs in the Dallas area, you can find them here:

I bow to JPG in all things ShopSmith, but I would grab that. It is ready to go out of the box (so to speak LOL) and has some extras. IMHO, it is worth it. :D

Truthfully, it looks in decent condition and someone said it has the all-important speed changer, but 10e and 10er seem to come around quite frequently and if you are patient you should be able to find one for a bit less if you want.
