PowerPro Upgrade, 2015

Re: PowerPro Upgrade, 2015
I know what you guys are saying. That is the reason I set my belts pretty tight but then I got the chatter in the Drive Sleeve and Quill assemblies that can't be adjusted out by balancing the belts. Has anyone experienced this? I am going to try running with looser belts and see what happens.
Re: PowerPro Upgrade, 2015
Thanks I found where written instructions called for installation of the eccentric at nine o'clock position. Yes< I missed this instruction
. Maybe missed it as it is stated in verbage on page 17. Shucks! would have spotted that instruction if expressed in numerals. (My excuse!)
As I remember, I started at about 7:00 to 8:00. Tisk - Tisk!
Oh well - that 9 o'clock thing is almost at the beginning of assembling the PowerPro after removing the old guts. To me, it really is not very important accept, as you mentioned, you don't want the screw getting caught in the opening. After installing the motor there is plenty of time to adjust the eccentric to even up the belt tensions.
I really have concern over the advice given you to allow 1/4" deflection in the belts. Before your post, I didn't think this was even possible.
Thanks again for your post! Hope everything goes well with your machine!

OK, after reading the previous, the Model 10 is more primitive
in WHICH respect? Especially, with a decent DC variable speed
motor?
On my 10ER, I can figure out EVERYTHING! And, don't need
to "Phone Home" (or can't even) to find out my problems!
(There's no "home" anymore, except Skip.)
Sorry guys, your "Mark" stuff may be newer. But Better?
Prove it!

10 ER, stripped down.
Basic 10ER, Parts machine. Will be a semi-dedicated drill-press machine.
10 ER, a "survivor" of the trailer fire, in the back yard, needing restoration. Has a Mk5 headrest. Finally, stripped down.
Numerous parts, for Model 10 stuff. Except for lower saw guard, A and B adapters, I've got it.
Looking for one more, or some 9 inch extension table raisers.

Re: PowerPro Upgrade, 2015
This thread reminded me that I have had a problem with drilling large holes (2 1/2) on my PowerPro 520. I did the DYI upgrade several years ago. If I feed the drill bit too fast the bit will stop and the belt slips. I pulled the end cover off last night and sure enough the upper belt has about 1/2" of play in it but the lower belt has between 1/8 and 1/4" of play. So, do I loosen the motor first, then adjust the eccentric to properly tension the upper belt and last adjust the motor to tension the lower belt?
Thanks
Jack
Thanks
Jack
Re: PowerPro Upgrade, 2015
Sounds like your belts are grossly out of balance. I would first balance the belts per the procedure in the instruction manual. I think you will find that your eccentric bushing is far from the 9 o'clock position. After balancing check the belt tensions. If the belts are still too loose you will have to adjust the motor belt tension and then re-balance.

Used a 2 1/2" forstner bit lately? DC motor 'not allowed'(too 'modern')
BTW 9 o'clock(or 3 o'clock) makes sense as a starting point to equalize belt tension on the PP. Towards 12 'o'clock increases motor belt and decreases spindle belt tension. Vice versa towards 6 o'clock.

I may be mistaken but I think skou loves his Model 10(s) like a mother loves her children. They have NO defects or shortcomings.
Re: PowerPro Upgrade, 2015
Yes, my eccentric bushing is at 6 o'clock. I will rebalance first and see if that does it.

Re: PowerPro Upgrade, 2015
This afternoon, while I was supposed to be sanding/re-finishing an old oak chair, Decided to play with my PowerPro - belt balencing.
Results: at most speeds the headstock is quiet as a church mouse - all the way from 250 to 10,000RPM. There is an exception however!
With no tools attached to the headstock, there is a definate rattle between 3400 and 3480. I couldn't find the rattle but thought it might be in the quill area. So running at 3450 (saw speed) I took a doubled up paper shop towel and gripped the quill end. All noise stopped!!! Did this over and over and each time there was no noise when grabbing the quill tip. Seems to me the rattle is along the quill assembly, not in the quill bearings. Runs fine! Saws great!
Re-adjusted the eccentric an now the belts are perfectly balanced. Deflection is 1/8" at the most. The top belt may be tighter than the lower, at least the lower one has a bit more deflection.
If you try this please use a folded up rag to protect your fingers from heat buildup.

Re: PowerPro Upgrade, 2015
I think "no load" is the most critical condition for under damped acceleration and deceleration. Always over shooting both directions.
Since there is no great amount of torque involved, I would place it in a nuisance category.
I be curious as to the actual source of the 'rattle'. I do not think the nylon coupler would rattle(either end). That leaves 6 bearings as possible culprits.
Is it possible the 'upper' end of the splined shaft is 'whipping'?
