If the data is not from keyboard input then it still has to come from somewhere, a data file or ??? So as long as it can be parsed (and it has to be no matter how you slice it) it can be read into either a data base or spreadsheet. So I'm not seeing just how you are picturing the process. A coma delimited file use to be a common source of data for a lot of things I did back in the day. Line feed/carriage return was also common notations.

Anyway I hope you show us what you are up to once it is finished.

Try NET USE LPT1: \\[Computer-Name]\Printer /PERSISTENT:YES

The net command may be farkled <- technical term . Try the above and I will still experiment. There IS a way!

We are basically <- no pun intended fooling any dos/windows based program that it is simply printing to the parallel port, but in actuality is being re-routed to the USB port. Tricky .....

BTW, make sure you are spelling the resource name correctly.

Try to issue a NET VIEW to find out the machine's name first, then
NET VIEW \\machinename will list all the shared resources there.


Also make sure you are sharing the printer. I'll wager you are not. ....

You are correct in that the input must come from somewhere. Probably for starters a keyboard, but not 'realtime', but as a matter of previously defining(inputting) data for later use by the barcoding program. Think batch processing rather than interactive.

Once a simple data definition is created the input can come from other programs etc. I lean more toward field defined data.(easier for human eyes to read)

I have a good scanner(been using it for several years in a retail pos application reading ups codes with personally created software including inventory control and order prediction etc.) that will read 3 of 9. It is rs232(com) so vintage equipment is a requirement for reading.

Truth be told this effort far exceeds the utility I will derive from it other than the challenge. It presents a vehicle for me to become more familiar with more current 'stuff'.

A simplistic use may be a yard sale.

A few months back I was able to glean data from pdf files and have that data consistent in the location of data fields. THAT was a challenge. I did so without determining what a pdf file is. Requires manual(use of windows stuff - mouse etc.) to set it up[PITA]. Also required filtering software go glean the desired 'stuff'. Biggest stumbling block was inconsistent input methods during creation of pdf file. Adobe is quite good at storing stuff differently (due to input methods varying), but adobe reader outputs it all the same.

The printer is 'wifi', so I misspoke when I said usb. I have not set up a lan so I do not understand the relevance of sharing. The computer/printer link is independent of the wired computer to router setup.

We shall see if net . . . reveals any surprises re monikers. Will be a while before I can 'try'. Do tell me about the 'net' dos command.

It doesn't matter if it is wifi or not. Make sure it is shared. The NET command is designed to manipulate ANY device that is available, even on a network (wifi or wired) with the NET command structure. Don't give up!
