Unethical? What else, coming from me! So, I needed to replaced my 12 inch sanding disk for, oh (a month or more) so now I have new disks. I go to try to remove the old WORN THE HELL OUT disk and the damned backer paper, stayed stuck on the steel disk.

I messed with it, for oh (maybe 5 minutes) and said, that this is enough of this horse poo. So, I take it out onto my concrete driveway, douse it with gasoline and lit it. PooF, it is as clean as a whistle in less than a minute... Problem solved

Now that you removed the finish and most likely warped it what is the plan?

Hey, Extramile, Do you not have a heat source anywhere? Some folks use heat blowers, heat lamps, halogen light, even the Sunshine. Sunshine work good for me.

Maybe you got lucky or perhaps when you get the sandpaper back on and start sanding you will find the warp.

Way back when in a land far far away and I was much younger we use to have a rating system involving beers. Wrapping your car in to a tree was rated at 25 beers, so based on that I would give this idea a seven beers rating.

There are a lot of decent ways of removing sandpaper so don't try this at home unless you feel lucky too.

I changed paper on mine this morning. I have always used my heat gun to warm the glue, then wipe the disk clean with naphtha. Easy peasy and it has worked for me for 45 years.

Question on the heat gun method:

Did you spin it at slow speed on the headstock and heat it with a heat gun, then stop it an pull it off?

I have done the oven heating method, but not with the heat gun method because I thought I might warp it, but if I could do it on the headstock, and mount a new sheet, that's what I wanted in the first place, and the disk is ready to use.

I lightly clamp the hub in my vise. I have a Wagner heat gun with a heat setting dial, numbered 1 - 9. I set it at 6 or 7, which is enough to soften the glue. I move the gun back and forth while pulling on the old paper. The disk is not hot to the touch when the paper is removed.

I lay mine on top of the fence in the mid-day Arizona sun to loosen the glue. Normally, that is all the heat required. Be careful when doing this. The disk gets hot enough to burn your hands.
