Just a few thougths on windows 10

I have been running windows 10 for a while now, forgot to right down the date of the latest build (10240) anyway it seemed quite stable and I had decided to do the upgrade to my main machine using this build. The machine is running fine and has been since the install. I did have to update the video card, lan and sound drivers. The only program that had to be updated was the antivirus software (AVG). I was at windows 8.1 and checked to be sure everything was up to date before doing the install of 10.

Some of the earlier build I played with were a little less then perfect and I would not have wanted to attempt to install and run on them full time. This build is different and has even lost the trial message from the screen. From what I can see it is ready for release or very very close.

Anyway I'm pretty happy with how things are working and just wanted to let you all know that.

I hope to free myself of Microsoft for ever over the next few years. I am moving to Ubuntu on everything as my time allows. I no longer have to develop software, support windows customers, etc, so the move makes sense to me. My final hurdle is getting some of my old (to the industry) visual languages to run in a windows compatibility mode. Once I have mastered that, I am done with Bill and his monopoly and free to go forth and compute in any way I want! LOL

I made the switch from Windows to Linux back in 1999. It was the best move I ever made. No more Microsoft frustration with having them try to control my life.
I'm using Linux Mint. It is built off of Ubuntu, but is even more user friendly than Ubuntu......and it is a ton cheaper than Windows. Everything is free.

Yeah, I hear you. I was unfortunately forced (like everyone) to not only support MS products, but develop my own software and utilities. I did that for 30 years, it bothered me every year but nothing I could do. We ran Linux servers on some of our server farm as well as MS. There are good and bad points about both, but the cost is tipping the scale for many. I know it finally did for me .... It is amazing how cheap you can build a computer .... if you don't have to double the cost with an MS OS.

And back to the subject of windows 10, things are still up and running so it has been stable for a few days now. I checked and it was installed on the 17th of this month and up 24 hours a day since. Not a long time but still encouraging.

I decide I was not to happy with the Cortana search box showing up all the time so it is now an icon. Pretty easy to find the "better for me" solution and fix.

I have a cheap web camera with microphone and using that mic is a challenge for Cortana. I have a better mic but I have yet to find it, put it away and now I can't remember where. This looks like it will be fun but I just don't have the time to play with right now. Come winter it will keep me busy.

My bluetooth receiver came today so I just had to play with it for a while. Now I can use my table, phone and computer to play through my stereo system which actually doesn't sound too bad. Enjoyed some vintage Simon & Garfunkel that way. I also found out the tablet doesn't have NFC but that is no big deal. They claim a range of 15 to 20 meters with the samsung hardware, that I have yet to test. Since I'm set up with the computer in a different room I'm also wondering how or if that will work so plenty of opportunity to play coming up.

for the last few months I have been playing with the sound activated commands, etc. I have a variety of mics but the only ones that seem to work well are USB with noise cancellation. Personally I thought a mini plug directly to the sound card would be the best, but not so far. Currently a Logitech unidirectional is the most reliable. Cortina and the associated programs have a difficult time with stray sounds. Not certain how well the pick ups on a laptop will work.

Using the Logitech is exceptional. I do have it on a shelf at mouth height, pointed at me about 2 feet away.

I have tried a number of omnidirectional with limited success even when only a few inches away.

The recognition in W10 is FAR superior to Dragon or Win 7, but still leaves a lot to be desired. Yes, I am very picky!

Dig out that other microphone and I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

I was also happily surprised that a few legacy programs which worked in XP but not 7 are working in 10. In some, the graphics are less than spectacular and a couple are about the only cause of crashes any more. Not certain if that is a problem with 10, the graphics card incompatible drivers or a combination. When I look at the dump it occurs at a buffer overflow that doesn't exist!! I'm not smart enough to understand where I should be looking so will just remove the offending programs and keep using them on my old and slow XP laptop . All of my crashes are automatically sent to MS however I don't think they will be using any resources to find out why these programs caused a problem and come up with an emulation solution.

Lots of goodies but many are difficult to find even when you know where you should be looking so I am thinking that a Win10 for dummies will be a New York Times best seller.

When MS Dos came out IBM had their their own version which was much faster
When MS windows came out IBM had OS then Warp which was far superior.
WordPerfect was the document processor of choice but MS gave Word out for free and everyone left WordPerfect.
Lotus was the spread sheet of choice but MS gave away excell and everyone left Lotus.
Peach text was the finance program of choice but MS gave away Money and soon everyone left for Money which later got beat out by quicken.

It seems to me Microsoft understood PC users and that they would abandon a more excellent program for a free one. And once they did and competition was dead you could charge what you will.

It is almost like PC users are getting exactly what they paid for. They weren't willing to pay so now they get Microsoft telling them what they are gonna get.
