Mini/midi length

I know I have seen this here before but i can't get a hold of it. I am wanting to cut some tubes to accommodate a bandsaw and a belt sander. I am wondering of somebody knows the tube lengths. I have seen them in pics setup on the same base reversed. Ot sure how yet. Gonna get the belt sander this weekend.

The MINI tube length I use are cut to 25 5/8" for way tubes and 26 3/8" for bench tubes. This allows me to get two sets of MINI tubes from a set of regular Shopsmith tubes. The way tubes should be 3/4" shorter than the bench tubes for proper alignment. No carriage was used on the MINIs I sold. The SHORTY has 18" cut from the tubes and has the carriage and main table still in place and shown in my posts. These were the tube length I have used for many years.

I forgot to mention I'll have a 510/520 carriage and a 510 main table too. I am a bit conflicted where my bandsaw will go.

The bandsaw on the left side and the belt sander on the right after switching sides with the hub and removing the main table. You do not need a reversible motor with this setup.

It also positions the operator on the 'control' side of the headstock.

A CAVEAT.


All too often pix on EB and CL have SPT's incorrectly mounted(wrong end etc.)


The belt sander (6x48) and the jig saw and scroll saw can be operated on the right(hinge) end since the direction of rotation does not matter.

Other SPT's not so.

With the carriage resident, the coupler may need help(quill will not reach far enough). Table will get in the way. I assume carriage is mounted as normal(between headstock and hinge end).

You misunderstood my 'intent'.

The belt sander must indeed be driven the same direction, but can be mounted on either side since the drive shaft extends out both sides.


Bad choice of words when I lumped the three together. Point was any of the three can operate on either end. The direction truly does not matter with the jigsaw and scroll saw.

Another not said thing was the operator position does not change with the belt sander, but moves to the back side with the jig/scroll saw.
