I am asking the Experts .. in my quest to upgrade my 500 to a 510 i about 8 months ago purchase a 510 upgrade from ebay. I have everything updated and i rebuilt my Headstock and it is running great now.. but I just now was able to get to the alignment of the tables and floating tables. I was attempting to align the main table when i discovered that it is off about 1/8 to 1/4 of a inch from front to back. I did all i could according to Nick but it would budge.. SO i searched here and found this thread:
So this morning i disassembled the table and remove the trunnions and found this:

My Rear Trunnion is 3/8" where my front Trunion is 1/2"
My Question is since i purchased the table used from email should I contact Shopsmith about the problem or can I contact Shopsmith Or should I just Try and drill out the rear trunnions myself? or should i just purchase a rear trunnion?
I do have the problem with the middle rear nut interfearing with the trunnion but since i removed the table I just tightened up the nut with the table removed.

Since Shopsmith's official position stated here on the forum is that the trunnions with the 3/8ths holes were not manufactured to specifications, I believe they will replace the trunnion free of charge regardless of when or from whom it was purchased.
On the other hand, if you don't want to wait, drilling them out is not difficult. I simply clamped my trunnion to the extension table and drilled it out in horizontal boring mode. It made alignment much easier.

Waiting won't be a problem will be going with the family to the beach in for a week. so i won't be able to touch this until i come back. I think i'll contact Shopsmith on Monday and see what they say.
Well i talked with "Dave" at shopsmith today and he said that the holes should be 3/8" of an inch so i guess i'll be drilling the holes out when i return from vacation

I think that info is incorrect.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop. .

I agree. this was the third attempt i made to contact Shopsmith the first attempt I talked with Gloria who said on Monday she would check and get back to me. I hadn't heard from anyone. I sent an email on Tuesday and not reply yet. so i thought i would try and call again today. and got Dave and that is what he said that the holes should be 3/8" I'll wait and see if shopsmith responds to my email..
I am not the 'authority' but I am here to tell you that the holes should not all be 3/8". There may have been a time but that time is long gone. I trunnion, manufactured today, will have 1/2" holes in both trunnions.
Until I drilled out holes, as a result of online communications with Shopsmith, mine were all 3/8". The discussion began, originally, during the Sawdust Sessions and has continued on until now. If you enough research on the forum you will find the discussion that ultimately led to a manufacturing change the resulted in 1/2" holes.
HOWEVER, I am hear to tell you that drilling out the trunnion holes (from 3/8" to 1/2") will not cure the alignment problem that you say you have. You can actually see this yourself. With the table mounted and all four trunnion bolts loose, grasp your main table with both hands and move it around. You will readily see that the table can be shifted "some" in all different directions. Now, push the table away from you and as far as you can to the left. While holding the table in place on the outfeed side, shift the infeed side to the right. It will move less than about 1/8".
Just spoke with Gale and she said at one time they did manufacture the hole 2 different sizes and she said to attempt to align with with all 4 bolts loose and then have someone hold the table while i attempt to tighten the bolts. She also said that they didn't have any record of me owning a 510. I told her i purchased the tables used and that is why i have a 510 tables. So My best course of action now it to attempt to drill them out and then align the table. if i screw it up i guess i can order a new rear trunnion
