Squealing headstock

Well, I only said to consider it, taking all of the things you mention into account. And no, I don't work for Shopsmith. I feel I should be an owner with all the money I've sent them.

If the motor squeals when it is one the test bench by itself the definitely change the bearings. They are the only things inside the motor that can squeal.

Agreed. But when I have to deal with a motor vs 'rest of headstock' issue, I was attempt to isolate the two from one another by removing the drive belt and running the motor.

HOWEVER, a motor that runs quiet under these conditions can still have bad bearings. Now if it squeals or 'grinds', which I think is the case here, wa2crk is dead on. It is the motor (the bearings).

Prognosis....the patient needs surgery.

I ordered some repair videos on eBay. I've also been in contact with another guy here..

The power-pro headstock is out of my price range and need at this point.

At absolute worst I'd replace the headstock with another mark v headstock.

I have torn it apart. There is a short list of things that seem wrong.

Problems that need to be fixed:

I broke the little nub that the quill spring attaches to.
There is also some slight rotational slop in the control sheave
The wiring is toast and very brittle by the switch.

Looks like you are only 42 miles from one of the foremost Shopsmith experts. Check with Bill Mayo in Plant City. A SUPER guy who will probably be able to help you....

If your motor is a GE then the wiring problem is typical and should be replaced
if your wiring looks like this it is probably not fried just old.

The culprit was one very corroded bearing at the fan sheave. Thanks to all for your input. And to bill Mayo for being kind enough to sell me the parts I broke and the parts I needed.

That is exactly what my wiring looks like. And yeah its a ge. I was shocked when I popped the caps off the motor and the copper was shiney and copery. I figured that my windings would be cooked.. thweywere just packed in very fine saw dust.
