Based strictly upon my personal experience with this computer, I am certain that my Windows 10 exercise was doomed from the start. The computer is a home brew, it is old, it was evaluated by Microsoft Upgrade Assist and was awarded a margin acceptance. Microsoft declared that there might be some issues; there was.
Users who want to upgrade will probably be successful so long as their computer is truly compatible with the upgrade criteria. There are just too many people out there who have upgraded successfully to believe otherwise.
I don't understand the "Screen Resolution" comment. My screen resolution is 1600 x 900 when using W7.

Re: Free Windows Upgrade
This has been my experience going from windows 7 to 10. I have a Microsoft store near me so I went there to have them check out my machine and clean it up before doing the upgrade. They would perform the upgrade but said they would keep my computer for 24 to 48 business hours. I decided to go home and conduct the upgrade myself.
It didn't go well so I had to go back to the Microsoft store and they reversed the process. Back to Win7 went well and I had full use of my computer for a few days. After I completed some tasks, I took the computer back to Microsoft and left it with them to be upgraded to win 10. 48 hours later I got my computer back and everything seemed fine. I enjoyed using windows 10.
Back home, everything went well until...
It turns out iTunes (which I use for my iphone) doesn't work properly. Apple support confirmed that Apple hasn't updated iTunes to work with win 10. They didn't have a scheduled date for the update. I use a Garmin gps and the software doesn't work at all. I also have a 4 hard drive bank that I keep all my data stored in. It didn't work. I had to go back to the Microsoft store and have them reverse my system back to windows 7.
My final conclusion is that I tried to update too soon after the release of the software. In the past, I always waited a while before upgrading. While windows 10 seemed to work well, my other software has yet to upgrade their drivers to work with it. I will wait before I complete the upgrade. Meanwhile I will wait and watch the other companies to see when they have updated their software. Everyone's situation is different depending on what other software they use.
I can say that overall my experience with the personnel at the Microsoft store was very positive and I liked what I saw of windows 10 and will upgrade when the time is right.
Regards,
Joe
