Next Project
So the boss has ordered up the next piece of furniture. This piece is a table that will be in the same room with the onyx bedside tables and will have some the same design features to tie the room together. The wood will be Honduran mahogany. The legs required obtaining 12/4 which was difficult to find here in the LA/Orange County area but thanks to Forrest finding a supplier in Van Nuys I managed to get it. The top will be a frame with a beveled glass insert. The biggest challenge will be the herringbone inlay in the top which will require making strips of herringbone inlay using paduak and white maple. The strips will be 3/8" wide by about 1/8" thick.

So I have an idea of how to make a narrow piece ( 3/8") wide piece of herringbone inlay but am am not satisfied with my idea. Has anyone on the forum done this ?

If you have acces to an INCRA TS/LS system (for the SS or if someone you know has it for their table saw), making the strips will be fairly easy. Before I got mine, I did something similar by setting up my bandsaw to cut thin strips, though they required sanding to get rid of the teeth marks.

I finally got some free time and was able to begin the project. I decided to start with the legs as they tend to be the most difficult for the boss to decide upon. It required building 4 prototypes before I got approval. The design is more art deco than anything else and as usual it will be a combination of padauk and Honduran mahogany. I made the padauk rings first because I felt it would be easier to adjust the rest of the leg to the ring than the other way around. The lower spindle I knew would be the part that she would have the most issue with and that was the part that required four tries to get right. I used an indexing router jig attached to the SS to produce them. One version had 12 facets which was rejected for the four sided version. The top piece in the picture is actually two pieces and will be cut in half. More to follow.

The wheel is an index wheel that holds the workpiece in place so you can use a router to shape the workpiece. I assume the box is a jig of some sort that guides the router to make the tapers on the mounted spindle. The original poster can explain further.
