Like this floor, Ashland WI Visitor Center

This re-purposed flooring is old flooring from a factory in days gone by. All end grain and from a sample about 2" thick.

Almost feel like giving this a try but way to much work for me to even think about. Old southern yellow pine in this case but I bet for a home you could even use softer woods.

The High School I attended had a 2X4 floor like that in the gym/basketball court.

Welcome center in Georgia on I 85 (if I recall) has a floor like that. I asked the lady what kinda wood and she said (with a sweet tea accent) "Jooooja pine".

I could be mistaken since it's been about 25 years ago, but If I remember correctly, a large part of the assembly area of the Caterpillar plant at Mossville, Illinois had floors made of end grain from timbers like what you have shown. It may have been at one of their other plants, but I am almost positive it was Mossville.

Good to see this floor again Ed. We ran into this center on our first trip to the lakes and we have never forgotten the floor. There's nothing wrong with your photography but this is one of those shots that just does not do justice to seeing the actual thing. It was such a vast area. Thanks for posting. It brought back fond memories.

Ibskot: Your memory is corret. The I85 visitors/rest stop has a similar floor with the exception that it is covered with a dark resin with I believe wider spacing.

The last time I saw a floor like that was in the Black & Decker manufacturing facility in Hampstead Maryland. Lots of metal drill chaff and broken screws embedded in the grain. Also was well oiled to keep down dust. At least that was what I was told.

I know many industrial plants/buildings that had wood floor in and around the Cleveland Ohio area had floors like this.

Many heavy equipment and machining shop type companies. If I remember correctly many of the car manufacturing plants in the area used this type floor in the machining areas.

Also most of the old textile factories in and around Greenville SC has floors like this.

I took a tour of the press room of the Chicago Tribune And it was like this. They mentioned the boards were 6 inches tall. Because the presses ran 24/7/365 they couldn't afford to be shut down for floor repairs. It already had a lot of years on it and was still great shape.
