I see no one has replied, and I don't have a direct reply either. However, you may want to post this question on routerforums.com. They have a sub-category under General Woodworking called "Special Needs Woodworking", maybe you'll find an answer/suggestion there?

Personally I prefer something with a back, but then that's just me.

I have tried what is called a mechanics stool with 2 1/2" casters. From that experience came away with a must for larger casters and definitely a back.

I like the idea of a quality drafting stool as a base with quality 3" casters. I'm going to look into that myself.

If the stool doesn't have casters already I'd be concerned the base is to small and would tip easy.

Greatly appreciate all the ideas and suggestions which are good food for thought! In the interim for the ideal solution I will use my Mobility Walker. It has 7" wheels (2 swivel, 2 fixed), brake on 2 wheels and a kind of back rest. Perhaps after trying it out a few modifications could work for my needs.

We got two of these for my father-in-law in his later years. He had one upstairs and one downstairs and if he went out for walk he always had a chair if he needed it, nice feature. They fold up nicely and can fit in a car pretty well.

The hand brakes also lock so it is reasonably stable but I wonder what happens when sawdust and wood chips get involved....

I personally have some shop stools but find it difficult to use with the shopsmith, as I like to move around too much. Sitting at a bench is more my style.

Some many years ago I did a lot of designing lab space for our needs and specified table/benches/stools etc. Our occupation/plant people came up with regulations that all of our rolling stools/chairs had to have 5 legs so I got to order newer versions and they came and collected the old 4 legged models and trashed them. I think perhaps one too many accident with the older versions tipping over. It was interesting in that that applied only to stools/chairs with wheels.

I have a bit more girth than some and need a higher capacity stool.

I looked at Flash Furniture Hercules Series Capacity Big and Tall Black Mesh Drafting Stool with Arms, 400-Pound Rating which is available on Amazon in models with and without arms.

It was $243.19 for the one without arms vs. $276.85.

I suspect there are other manufacturers out there with High Capacity Stools that might be less. 3" replacement Casters would be the same for just about any 5 wheel stool. Mobility Walker 7" wheels and brakes is also a good candidate for some I am sure.
