Base Reassembly(C) Hinge Pin
This thread shows a method to reassemble a Mark V base(Hinge Pin).
The Hinge Pin (and retaining roll pin). Make sure BOTH ends of the roll pin are tapered(Not mushroomed by previous attempts to insert/remove it). File end if necessary.
Insert the hinge pin through the lower part of the end casting and into the way tube end. When near totally inserted, rotate the pin so the hole in the pin will line up with the hole in the casting when inserted further.
Start the roll pin into the hinge pin hole through the hole in the end casting. Before pushing it in all the way, make sure(again) the end of the roll pin is still tapered(not mushroomed). Clean it up with a file if necessary before inserting it further.
Drive the end of the roll pin slightly into the end casting hole. This will allow easier removal if you need to later. The pin is removed by driving it ALL the way in and through a hole on the OTHER side of the hinge pin bore.
This thread is one of several which illustrate a method for reassembling a Mark V. Please post a reply and inform me of any errors or confusion. They WILL be fixed!

Re: Base Reassembly(C) Hinge Pin
Hey @JPG, I have a question. I'm trying to get the pin that holds the hinge pin in - out. I don't think that it has ever been removed. I just purchased a late 70's model Mark V and its in good to fair shape. Just needs some rust removal and lubed up.
And why does it look like the pin on yours is on the opposite side from mine? Is this a design difference between models? If I'm standing at the operation side of the head stock, the pin is on my right on the other side of the Mark V. Looking at your pictures, it looks like its on the near side of the Mark V. I've tried uploading a photo, but for some reason it won't let me this time.
I've tried everything I can to get it out and it won't budge. I thought that possibly I could just drive it on through, but before doing that I looked and the hole doesn't continue through the casting.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I feel like an idiot for something so small to be what's holding me up from progressing.
Thanks!

Re: Base Reassembly(C) Hinge Pin
If you drive the pin through (clear of the shaft), you'll find the pin on the floor. It drops out the bottom of the casting.

Wow. That explains why I could see light through the pin but couldn't see a hole. It all makes sense now. I was wondering how I could keep driving it in but couldn't see a hole on the opposite side.
Thank you very much.

I have not a clue why yours is on the opposite side???
Before attempting to drive the pin 'through' verify the hole(in the casting) does indeed go 'all the way through'.

Will do. Thank you.
Re: Base Reassembly(C) Hinge Pin
When did they quit using the roll pin? The pivot base on my dedicated drill press has the roll pin and the shaft is 3/4". The base came from my original MK V 510 when I converted it to double tilt and Power Pro. The machine was bought new in 1994.JPG wrote:I have not a clue why yours is on the opposite side???

I built a shorty from parts on eBay. That pivot base does not have a roll pin. It has C clips on each end of the shaft on the inside of the pivot arm. Also the shaft is only 1/2".

***** No longer 'clueless'! I have them both ways.
I think the one I posted above is 'not typical'.
I do not know why/when they vary.

Is this the hole that is being discussed here?jsburger wrote:When did they quit using the roll pin? The pivot base on my dedicated drill press has the roll pin and the shaft is 3/4". If it is, I would sure appreciate a photo of the setup that uses NO ROLL PIN to secure the shaft.
