My desktop computer is acting up. I'm running Windows 7. A couple days ago ANY video I try to view is all 'herky-jerky'. Images start and stop erratically, it's almost as if frames were missing. The audio is fine. It doesn't seem to matter where I see a video it has this same problem. No other problems or systems.

So if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it. I'll try to respond to any questions promptly. Thanks for reading.

If "any video" means internet videos, it sounds like an internet speed/connection issue (video takes more bandwidth than audio). You can use a site like speedtest.net to check your connection.

Your cache may be full also. On windows system start up IE and click the gear icon to upper far right. From the pull down box select internet options. in the box the comes up about half way down is delete. Click it another pop up box should appear that gives you options to what to delete. You can delete everything but you will lose any stored passwords. Or you can select delete everything except those things in you favorites. Frankly if you have never done this before and you have your passwords I would delete everything. You will free up tons of room and hopefully your videos will run better.

I do this on a regular basis just to get rid of junk and cookies.

It will do all this for you and it will also clean up your register. Again this is something I run regularily. I gave the correct web address make sure you only download from the Piriform website. It is reliable and with out any virus or maleware.

CCleaner is a powerful tool. You could find yourself mumbling.

You might try powering off and on (wait 5-10 seconds in between) any kind of network devices you have, e.g., DSL/cable modem, router/wifi. I've seen those get confused, causing slow speeds, and a reboot take care of it.

Which videos give you problems?

Are you talking about video from your own web cam or CDs that you are playing or uTube stuff or video that you have down loaded?

This reminds me of a recent editorial from the publisher of the small local FREE weekly newspaper I deliver. Apparently the RANSOM SCAM is STILL been going around of late and sure enough someone in the office innocently downloaded something that infected the network and the system consisting of some 3TB of data/info. The data/info is still there, but the scammers apparently encrypt the data in a way that unless you pay them a RANSOM you no longer are able to access YOUR data/info.

This type of scam gives new meaning to the word BACKUP!!!!!!

Yes, my publisher's I.T. guy had a very recent backup and was able to RESTORE the system/data without much fanfare or harm done.

On a commercial/business level, regularly backing up one's system is NOT an option, it is a MUST!!! On a personnel level probably not so much, but with that said, I do backup my system/data from time to time. I'm sure we have all downloaded questionable things, looked at things we know we shouldn't, ect., only to find that we have been bitten in the ass with malware, a virus, or whatever. I myself have been bitten with a bug or 2 and checking to see when I last backed up my system vs wasting time trying to fix the problem and deciding to just RESTORE my system to a time before the problem bit me......

My son-in-law fixed this for me over the weekend. I use Firefox as a browser. Here is the sequence and change.

Advanced
he un-checked "Use Hardware Acceleration when Available"
finally he closed the browser and opened a 'new' window


BINGO it's all good again. Thanks for everyone for trying to help this old fart.

Well, just for grins and giggles, I too disabled "Use Hardware Acceleration when Available".

We'll see, hopefully, what that will do. If it does something that I don't like, I hope I can remember what I did to cause it.
