Rotting wood and what ever this is, sure has an interesting look if nothing else.

I'm so used to your guessing games, I think these are beautiful photos of Fomes annosis conks - a root rot in old growth trees. Unfortunately the mycelia of this fungus will infect the soil and catch onto other trees- even newly planted ones.

I'm so old fashoned, I just found out the USDA has changed the name of this fungus. Oh well the fungus is still the same regardless of it's name.
