unwanted phone calls question

Just got another one of these this morning.

By looking at our caller ID and not actually crunching the numbers it looks like we get about 90% junk calls and just 10% family, friends and returned calls with a few public service announcements and the likes. That is a large percent of junk calls and it has even gotten to the point I have thought about having the phone taken out but of course I can't really do that but....

We are on the governments do not call list. I have blocked some numbers via my phone service and we have requested our name to be removed from a few legitimate places(that seems to work for most of them). How ever robocalls is another matter, and a real pain in the you know where.

Our phone service allows us to block anonymous numbers and we have that set on.

While looking up things today I found this service (free) and was wondering if anyone is using it "Nomorobo" (it doesn't work on all lines but it will on ours)?

Are other having this same issue? What are you doing about it?

We started using nomorobo about 3 months ago. We love it! One ring and the calls vanish.

I went ahead and started the Nomorobo service. Pretty painless to do. Now all I have to do is wait for the phone to not ring I guess.

You will hear it ring once, then the Nomorobo system takes over if it is determined to be spam. So just get in the habit of not running to the phone on that first ring.

Maybe the government should install these for all of us that are on the infamous "do not call" list.

Oh that's right they won't do that because "THESE WORK". and do what they are supposed to do..... Something the DNC list has never done....

I got fed up with this so much back it the day when everyone called during the dinner hour trying to get you to switch long distance carriers that I did something that stopped it in its tracks for a while as the person back then was a live caller.

What I did: I set up one of those suction cup recording devices on my phone and called numbers until I received the message “I am sorry. The number you have reached is no longer in service. If you feel you have reached this number in error…” I kept the recording going for several seconds past the end of the message.

I then set up my answering machine to answer on the first ring, and re-recorded my answer message, playing back the not in service message I had previously captured. I called all my friends, family, and co-workers and told them to just hang on past the message, wait for the beep, and record their message.

Amazing results. I don’t know if there is an inaudible tone that accompany the messages of today that automated systems might detect of if they could detect the message itself, but it may still have some value to do that even today.

Cell phones may be a challenge, but still might have merit

I just got rid of my house phone about 7 years ago and never looked back. I get an occasional one on the cell phone but not enough to worry about. Besides all the numbers I regularly want to receive are in my phone book and the caller is announced in my Blue Tooth ear piece when the phone rings. No caller announcement = no answer.

I have a voice challenged handicapped individual that lives at home so having a land line that populates the e911 with a physical street address in case of an emergency is the only reason we still have one.

I understand but if you have GPS turned on with a Cell phone and you call 911 from the house would not the result be the same? Maybe the land line is more reliable.

The junk calls seem to come sporadically. They build up for a few months, getting more and more often, then suddenly, they come almost to a halt. About the same time I see that our State Attorney General has filed a suit against them. That brings it to a halt until someone else starts up and the cycle repeats itself.

I just hang up on them when they call. Having the phone ring one time would be just as annoying as having it ring for 2 or 3 times, so Nomorobo wouldn't help me.

Just hang up. It will slow down when the authorities put the squeeze on them.

I need to keep my land line because I don't have a cell phone. I refuse to have a phone that goes with me and annoys me away from home as well as at home.
