Conical sanding disk
Do I need one and what can I use it for that my 6x48 belt sander, spindle sander, and/or jointer could not do instead?

It is an amazingly simple tool as modifed that produces results that are indeed superior to the disk sander, or belt sander, (both of which are good) and coupled with the sharpening jig is THE way to sharpen planer and jointer knives accurately and safely.

Sanding end grains as smooth as butter.... is commonplace with it.
I'm sure others have their own favorite uses for it.

Well I have had it for a few weeks, but between my 95 year old mother that was as fit, active and mentally sharp as most 70 year olds, she got a UTI and then pneumonia and spent most of Aug in the hospital, and now has been in a care facility rehapping, I did not have time to play with it.
I replaced an exterior table top with a piece of white oak and set it up to sand the end grain, all I can say is SWEET!!!!! I am not a tool nut, but this thing is a very nice thing to have around.

Sorry about your mom ....
The CDS is an amazing device. It is, as far as I know, unique to ShopSmith,

A greenie for sanding, shortened one up a bit and have the belt sander on one end and the other is for disk. I agree, I have never seen anything like it prior to a posting here by someone last monthish.
One ER is set up as a drill press, the other one for turning, if I ever get around to that. Need to pick up a speed changer for it to be ideal. They just dont make em like that anymore short of a Power Pro head stock.

Well all, I am making a cabinet with flush drawer faces. You always want a perfect fit and spacing between the drawer face and cabinet frame for appearance sake. Having my morning coffee and Wa La, make the drawers the same size as the opening, and then run the drawer sides and drawer face top and bottom edge on the conical disk to get that perfect 1/32nd gap/spacing between the drawer face and cabinet frame.

I used the same technique earlier this year for a cabinet I made. Its great for that final tweak you need for a close fit.
