Shopsmith lower saw gaurd

I recently inherited a shopsmith mark V-B and am learning to use it. While testing the table saw, I noticed the lower saw blade guard won't fit between the table risers to allow me to get the saw blade lined up beneath the opening in the table. Any idea what I'm doing wrong here?

Welcome to the Forum. Photos would help. Is it possible you are using the newer-style lower saw guard with an older style carriage/table?
