Does it still still retract, but stops abruptly?
If so the quill splined shaft has exited the drive sleeve and will not slip back in because the splines are not lined up.
With the power off rotate the quill shaft and the rear pulley. Hopefully the shaft will slip into the sleeve when the splines line up.
If the retract spring is not pulling the shaft up, that is a different problem.

Well .... do you understand the Fabric of the Cosmos string theory?
He had taken the gauge rod nuts off and had extended the quill too far. It had jambed on the spline. Once I explained (I am an expert now you know LOL) how it all "meshed" together, he understood, got the quill out and put it back in. I think his spring came off the mushroom pin on the shaft, but I explained how to "git 'er done" so I suspect he will be coming on soon fully functional .....

The bench legs are all done and the castors are attached. Next I need to get the material for the bench top. I think it will be 6/4 popular.

The bench is put together. It is 6/4 Popular. The finish is one coat of Shellac then 3 coats of exterior oil base Polyurethane. Now it is time to assemble the machine. However, I still need to clean and polish the aluminum table tops. As you can see the bench over hangs the legs by 1/2" all around. Skip did that on his pristine '53 restoration and I like the looks. There are round overs all around on the top side. 1/8" between the planks and 1/4" on the outside edges.

I brushed it and it is not as good as it looks in the pictures. A few runs and dull spots from sanding the previous coat. I am going to touch it up as it stands before I assemble the machine.
