1957/83 Mark V, 12 Thickness Planer Value?

1957/83 Mark V value?

Hello,

My Father passed away in 1999 and left me his Shopsmith Mark V and Shopsmith 12" thickness planer. (The 57 Mark V's motor was replaced in 83)I've kept them more as reminders of my Father than for actual use. I now need to try to get them into the hands of someone who can appreciate and utilize them.

Would it be against the rules of this forum to post some pictures of these items so as to get a better idea of their worth from actual Shopsmith users? I am not a woodworker myself.

If not, can you please let me know how I can best proceed?

Respectfully,

The straight answer is: Yes it is against the 'rules'.

You have already spilled the beans.

Local as in large radius to include close by population density peaks.

The problem with using Craigslist to determine pricing is that there are a lot of posted prices that are purely wishful thinking. Those machines never sell, but they do sometimes motivate other sellers to post at similar prices. So you have to watch Craigslist for a few months, and monitor what actually sells, in order to figure out the true local market price.

Another possibility is to use eBay and search for listings in your area, with the search filters set for sold items only. Unless you are willing to ship, you should compare only items that are offered local pickup only. That can give you a 90-day selling history immediately, but the sample size may be small (or non-existent).

I am sorry that you lost your father in 1999 and I am moved by the respect and honor you show both your father and the equipment he left you.

The folks you find here are some of the finest one could ever know and I too hope your gear finds a home where it will be treasured, and used frequently.

Be sure to check you PM for messages, which is the protocol we use for these types of matters. Thank you also for the courtesy you showed in asking the proper procedure for the forum.

If you will hang around the forums just a bit longer, we might have a chance to convince you to keep the gear and make sawdust with us... Blessings
