Joint Matic

Post by lalkie »

I just purchased a joint matic (horizontal router jig) and have mounted it to the tubes of my 510. It is solid and the router seems to run fine. the only problem I have found is the distance from the face of the collet to the face of the fence on the joint matic is about .877. the shank of most of my router bits is about 1.15. this only leaves a small amount of the shank inside the collet. Does anyone else have one of these and have you experienced the same problem? Larry

I don't have a Joint Matic, but I did buy an extension like this (not sure if it was this exact one) for similar issues with my router table and some templates.

Did you notice any run out with the extra length? I had a black and decker model 7610 with a rack and pinion adjustment. It would not go far enough. I replaced it with a craftsman router that had the ring adjustment. I finally took the red ring adjuster off the router and now I can get enough length so the shank of the router bit is solid. I would like to hear from some that uses one to see how they solved the problem. My joint matic was apparently made in july of 1990 if Shopsmith is using dates as a model number. Thanks for the reply. I may get an extension if the run out does not appear to be to bad. Thanks Larry

Hi,

Not many jointmatic people here but I am one. I have a Porter Cable 690 base mounted on mine and do not have any problems with bit reach for the bits I have.

Any particular combination of router and bits might bring on what you are seeing. Is your router base one with a plastic sub-base? If so that should be removed before mounting.

Not sure who's bit you have but they also come in various lengths. I do have a few DeWalt bits that are on the short side but I don't use them for this application.

If you have a picture or two that might be worth sharing as there are other things that could be issues that might show up.

I will warn you if you have the model with the plastic slide that they are prone to cracking so read and follow the instructions very closely. Mine has a repaired one that seems to be holding up but I'm cautious with mine and baby it.

Haven't noticed any run out issues, but have only had to use it a couple times.

The plastic base has to be removed to attach the router to the router to the steel plate on the joint matic. That plate is about 1 inch from the fence on the joint matic which takes up a lot of the router adjustment. I changed from a black and decker router model 7610 with rack and pinion adjustment to a craftsman router with the large ring adjustment. I recently removed the plastic adjusting ring and this gives me enough distance to put the bit about all the way in the collet and am able to cut box joints in a 3/4 inch board. I am not getting many posts relating to my problem and none that indicate they have this problem. I looked at some plunge routers and the face of the collet adjusts to the face of the base plate which is the what all the routers I have seen do. Thanks for the response guys. I may get a collet extender which would help a lot. Larry

I will start paying more attention the bit length and measure mine. Larry
