My money is on the fan sheave rubbing on the motor. The cause is the spacer, as JPG has said. Part #504205 Cost? a whopping $1.45.

These can be found by clicking "products" on the top red line then "Service Parts" on the drop down menu. Go to Mark 7/ Mark 5 then conventional headstock. Now parts list and/or expanded diagram.

. . . It looks like the teeth on the back side of the control knob are in REALLY bad shape. 1 item that I will be replacing.

. . . The support arms on the porkchop look a little spread out as well, another good reason to replace that entire speed control assembly.

There is a seller on E-Bay that refurbishes control knobs by replacing the cast teeth with steel gears. An excellent improvement. A bit cheaper also(he pays return postageIIRC). You send him 'yours' and he returns a 'fixed' one immediately. He will if requested return 'yours' 'fixed', but that adds to turnaround response time.

The splayed legs of the speed control can be overcome be replacing the tension pin with a 2 1/2" screw that has an unthreaded shank below the head, a couple of washers and a lock nut.(a recent posting)

Now how about a pix of the quadrant gear(porkchop).


Now if you really want to spend all that money on a complete speed control, that is fine and a prudent plan. However save the parts you have and refurb it so as to have a spare. You will learn from that.

I would say this speed control handle is shot. There are some teeth on it, but most of them are completely shot. No wonder the speed dial wasn't turning!

And the scorch marks on the motor shield or whatever you call it at 7:00 and 11:00 positions seems to indicate that the sheave is contacting it there.

Is the new spacer a different part that would fix this problem or will I need a new sheave?


And here we have the pork chop. I am for sure going to get a replacement speed control, but I will try to salvage this one if you think it is worth it.

The gentleman on E-Bay can resurrect that knob and make it more durable than when it was new.

The new spacer is thicker. A thin washer(5/8" retaining ring) will overcome any groove worn in the fan sheave.

The set screw will be extremely tight! It needs to be so when you put er back on.

A pix of the porkchop advanced off the wormgear would reveal the condition of those teeth and the condition of the legs. I am guessing the wear is skewed.

Since you stated earlier the speed changed easily, the porkchop is likely not terminal.

It is possible the fan sheave is somewhat loose(speed varies the 'noise' and at rest it clears). Does the fan sheave 'wobble' as the motor shaft is rotated?

I have used many dozens of his steel gear speed control handles for many years without any problems. In fact, I am shipping him 10 speed control handle with damaged teeth today. I did not find his Ebay listing today but know he is still offering the steel gear speed control handles.

Thanks beeg. I got a complete speed control assembly off of eBay last night, but I will send my broken knob in for an upgraded one. Never hurts to have spares. Thanks for the link!

I ordered the spacer for the fan sheave from Shopsmith. Hopefully I will get everything next week and get it installed without too much trouble. Maybe I'll be ready to start figuring out how to use this thing next weekend.

My parts finally arrived and I'm ready to get this puppy up and running. First problem, how do I remove the old spacer. I can't figure out how to get the old one out and I don't see any instructions.
