ROOKIE MISTAKE - Turned Speed Dial before turning motor on

Everything working fine until I did this. Its a SS MK 5 probably for the late 50s (serial # 329275 with no model number) Bought 2nd hand without any manuals and used it sparingly over 30 years.

When I turn it on now, the quill won't turn and it trips the circuit breaker. Read the instructions on-line for resetting the slow speed setting if you turn the SS motor off at a high speed setting. Got quill turning but only a quarter turn.

Any remedy - a way to reset so the motor is back on the slow speed setting and get it back running?

If you have one, install a sanding disk and use it to slowly turn the main shaft while you turn the speed control.

The motor belt has dropped too low into either the idler pulley(fast) or the motor pulley(slow). More likely the former. FWIW that can also happen if the SS is moved/bumped with it set to fast.

Pulling the speed control(knob,porkchop etc.) will allow the control sheave to be moved away from the idler sheave thus allowing the belt to escape.

Prior to doing anything, verify the 'stuck belt'.

Thanks JPG, your post was spot on.
It took a couple of tries to figure out the variable speed pulley and the worm drive setting on the Speed Control bracket. Now its back running with the right speed settings.
