5/8" Arbor Problem

I have a 5/8" arbor I installed on the quill of my 510 and used for quite a while without the upper saw guard. I know, I know that's a NO NO!. When I finally got around to putting the upper saw guard on I ran into a problem. The kerf knife didn't line up with the saw blade. After checking and checking, found the arbor was not shouldering up to the quill collar, in other words it was not going on the shaft far enough. It took me about an hour or so to remove the arbor from the shaft. It was like trying to remove a straight bore from a taper hole. After finally getting it off I found I had a second arbor # 555608 still in the wrapper that goes on the quill shaft smoothly and bottoms up against the aluminum collar as it should allowing the kerf knife to line up with the blade as it should.

I called Shopsmith and talked with Gail. She suggested I send it in for quality control to have a look see.

My question is, has anyone else had this problem with 5/8 arbors. As near as I can tell the problem arbor is a # 555321

Are you sure there's no burr inside the arbor?

There is no burr on the inside of the bore. The bore on the new arbor was done with a drill or lathe tool that cuts the bottom flush with the sides. the problem bore was done with a drill that doesn't cut flush with the sides or 90 degrees might be a better explanation. As a result I believe the hole should have been drilled a little deeper. Further,when the problem arbor slips on the shaft, it begins to bind about 1/8" from the aluminum collar, if you tap it to go on more it's hell to get back off.

Something definitely not right!!

DonI believe that there is at least one manufacturer on the internet that provides look alikes for SS stuff. There may be others also or you might have one from one of the now defunct SS clone manufacturers.

Good point. I didn't even think about a clone. To be honest about it, I am not sure where it came from. I know for years I used the 5/8" arbor normally used with old moulder cutters for a 5/8" saw blade and never had any problems. The more I think about it, I believe it may have been part of the accessories acquired with a Mark VII. In any case, it's on its way to Shopsmith. They will probably say it's not their product and ship it back. If so I will drill it deeper myself.

I do not think it is a MVII vintage arbor.

Clone maybe, but the black oxide finish is a SS Inc, thing.

So, you may be getting a new one from SS.

Good News!

Got a call from Gail at SS. They found the 5/8" arbor to be defective and are sending me a replacement no charge!!
