Yesterday I was going to replace the long tubes on a Mark V that I have for sale on the Greensboro Craigslist with short ones. I welded two 18" tubes together for the bench tubes and wanted to clean them up. My shorty and regular Mark V that I have strapped together for long tubes is at my other shop. So I decided I needed an extension for my 520. Still have to get some decent hardware to put it together with but here's the usable prototype.

The offset posts and flat steel will be replaced with angle iron and round steel pipe

Has anyone found a steel pipe or rod that matches the lathe end support holes without machining?

So how are you going to HEAVILY WEIGHT the tail stock end?
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop. .

If the 1 3/4" holes, 1 1/2" EMT.

For sanding the way tubes weight was irrelevant. I am open for suggestions if it may be needed for heavier items.
The SPT tubes are the support for the flat bar which with the bolt pulls the tie bar toward the headstock.

I measured the lathe tailstock holes to be 1.23". One inch ID galvanized steel pipe was too large.
