I am able to find just about any piece of hardware I need in brass,bronze, stainless, or any other material at my local Ace Hardware store. They have hardware I never knew even existed until I spend a bit of time browsing their shelves. And, they are less than a mile from my house, so no waiting for hardware to be delivered.

I agree with the local hardware store advice. Some of their prices are competitive with Lowes or Home Depot when one factors in the added time and distance to get to the latter. I do miss over here in Slovakia the comprehensive selection of hardware that the Ace (or now near my mother they re-branded to Do-It-Best) has in those drawers.

My local ACE Hardware Store has a great fastener assortment. They don't have it all but have sure gotten out of a bind many times and I don't have to wait for delivery. I do mail order my wood working screws as I prefer robertson drive.

No Ace here! No Do it Best here. Only one small locally owned hardware store(on the other end of town).
HD rarely has the weird stuff I typically look for. Lowes is a bit better.
Mom n pop will order if necessary(TTL).
Trouble is, what 'we' need is that which is not very profitable. Nuts n bolts does not pay the rent etc..
HD was a bit better before they changed suppliers(brand).
As for Bolt Depot, even MickyD has nice things to say regarding his competition.

Like the charts and such that you can print out. Haven't done so yet but that looks like a nice project for this weekend.
We have had some good places to get fasteners but one by one they have closed up shop and now I'm left with the limited selections at the big box stores and chain hardware stores. Nice to have another place to look.

Do not forget Lee Valley the just released their fall 2015 hardware catalog.
As for Ace hardware most closed because people went to the big box store instead of them. If you live in an area that does not have a ACE Hardware it is probably because they closed do to lack of business.
I'll will admit it, it grits my teeth to pay a buck or two more for something at ACE until I think about gas to get to the big box and what I would do if the ACE closed. So each time I buy something in the store I always tell them I bought there to keep them in business.
Plus I learned to talk to everyone in the store. Now when I walk in instead of them just saying hello or can I help you. They say oh man wait until you see what we just got in. Or the thing you were telling us about that you saw on the Internet, well we figured out where to order it and got one in. Want to see it?
