I get the woodsmith etips and the one I got today had an interesting idea of how to set up your drill press. The idea does have a potential flaw but then that is life.

Ok, I give. The only potential flaw I can see is if quill end play is misinterpreted. But I suspect that is not what you are talking about. :confused:

The slots in the table would cause issues with the dial indicator tip / probe. Those are spring loaded and would extend fully as soon as they lost contact with the table. You wouldn't be able to exit the slot without raising the quill.. And throwing off your whole calibration...

Is that the right answer!?!

I give up also.

The gauges can be pushed up manually to get out of the slots.

Any deviation from square/vertical with the rod attachment would be the same for all angular positions(rotating quill).

Too, if the dials are not co-planer to the quill it will throwbthe readings out of whack.

There is only ONE gauge. The pix is a 'double exposure' showing it in two positions as the quill is rotated.

Easy enough to compensate for the table grooves. Use an auxiliary table WITHOUT grooves.

Seems like it would be really unbalanced with only one dial. I know that they aren't that heavy, but heavy enough when measuring thousandths is an inch.

I have used this for some time to tram my milling machine. Works great and you could probably build one with a couple of inexpensive indicators.
