Don't I wish I had more discretionary funds

New Wave Automation has a CNC machine called a Piranha with a starting cost of $1600. It is small and would be a good educational tool for someone like me if I had the funds.

What interested me was that it also can be a laser cutter and a 3D printer. As of now this was the first of this sort of triple purpose machine I have been exposed to. Now of course I want one but I know the cost will be a whole lot more then the initial cost. How much more would depend on how much more you get and the laser and printer and associated software would more then likely kill me.......

This being retired has it good points but if I were still working I would have already placed an order.

Me too, ED! Just told the wife I am going to start a new "foxie pocket" for one of these CNCs. Maybe if I tell my Son, Grandsons, neighbors, etc that might help garner contributions.

I'm not against begging when it comes to something exciting like this!

If all you want is a CNC machine to putz around on in your garage, you can DIY one for less than a grand.. which isn't cheap, but can be done in stages if need be.

The guy I bought my Mark VII from had an incredible CNC set up for his garage and he told me it ran him about 600.

The $1600 gets you the base machine. You add your own router, bits and other parts to make it functional. It does at the moment have a "free" touch pad. The other functions are also add-ons and they would have there own associated costs so I don't think even $3000 would cover it.

The $1600 I could save up for and have one in a year or so, I've already spent that on a powerpro headstock this year....... one that is I'm still waiting for after ordering 3 months ago.

I think this is the same one I got a KickStarter email for. The deal was for $2900 or there abouts, they gave you the whole enchilada when it was finally done. PLUS a hat and T-shirt adverting their product!!

I am still so interested in this one that I have seriously considered going to the credit union to get a loan, but still have to pay off Lowe's for the Mark 7 first!

And Chris it's not that they stop paying you when you retire so much as every thing else goes up in price (often on a weekly basis), just not your income!

Ed, have you thought about talking to a local school about writing a grant and then getting to use the 3 system CNC as part of the bargain?

I think you got it right. That is what I found. I have no problem with the price of the full up machine. My wife and I would love to play with it. However it is untested. I want to wait until there is enough real consumer input to see if the price is worth it.
